Our New Discovery

On Saturday July 19, 2008 our lives changed. We learned we were going to have a baby! We were very much surprised because we have been battling with my lack of ovulation since April 2007 when we decided to try for a baby. I visited my OB often since that time and was always being prescribed medication to induce a period since I wasn't able to get them on my own due to my polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In March 2008 I started taking Metformin to lower my insulin (PCOS causes an insulin resistance and that is one of the factors preventing proper ovulation). I was told it would take at least 3 months to overturn my ovarian environment and possibly after that time, I might ovulate on my own. Well almost 5 months went by and I still was not getting periods on my own (which meant no ovulation) so we decided to meet with the fertility specialist my OB referred us to. He was going to have tests done for both of us to make sure that my PCOS was the only thing we were up against. On July 2nd, they did a pregnancy blood test and it was negative so I started the medication to induce a period a few days later. After I finished it, I was expecting to start a new cycle within a day or two as has happened in the past. Well, 4 days later I still hadn't started so I decided to use one of my cheap dollar store pregnancy test and much to my surprise it came up positive before the test was even done! I went running down the hall to show Kent and he was skeptical at first. So 2 1/2 hours later I took another one and that was positive too. That night we got a 2 pack of digital tests and the one I took was positive as well. I took the other one the next day and of course, it was also positive. Kent was pretty convinced by then so we called my parents on Sunday and told them the news. They were shocked but happy!

On Tuesday July 22nd, my pregnancy was confirmed by my OB's office so we told Kent's parents that day, as well as Wayne and Julie (Kent told Wayne and swore him to secrecy but I couldn't let him keep that secret from Julie so I just had to tell her too). They took some blood to check my hcg (pregnancy hormone) levels and when they called me on Thursday, I was told they were at 15,000! I did some research and found out that a level that high is generally found in the 6-8 weeks of pregnancy. I knew I wasn't that far along so I wasn't sure if it was a multiple pregnancy or not. I was told to have an ultrasound done to confirm a viable pregnancy and to also date my pregnancy (silly doctor's office thought I was 11 weeks since I hadn't had a period since May 4th)! We had our ultrasound that Friday and we saw the gestational sac and yolk sac and everything looked quite well. The tech estimated me to be around 5 weeks and 2 days.
